Abstract

Abstract: Chickens were vaccinated comparatively with intact influenza virus of the strains A/Sing/1/57 (H2N2), A/Hong Kong/1/68 (H3N2) and A/Port Chalmers/1/73 (H3N2) and with viral subunits and the antineuraminidase (AN) antibody response was examined.Subunit preparations were obtained by treatment of virus with either, bromelain, Sarkosyl and Nonidet. The AN antibody response was recorded by means of a photometric method capable of analyzing mixtures of AN antibodies oriented to antigenically different N2 neuraminidases [1].It was found that vaccination with some of the subunit preparations yielded AN antibody response oriented to heterologous neuraminidase, while vaccination with the corresponding intact viruses gave AN antibody response oriented to homologous neuraminidase, only. The same conclusion was reached when testing sera by means of the enzyme inhibition test as recommended by the WHO.These results were interpreted to suggest that the neuraminidases of the strains tested are antigenically inhomogeneous and that disruption of virus can result in the release of antigenic components which are not directly discernible in intact virus.
